Facilities and procurement managers look for custom trash cans when stock bins do not fit a site's size, brand standards, or sorting needs. At ClearStream, we design and fabricate fully custom garbage cans, branded waste stations, and custom recycling containers made to each organization's specifications. We have produced custom containers for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and a University of Tennessee prototype program.
This page covers what a custom container project involves, what we've made, and how to start a conversation about yours.
What Goes Into a Custom Container Program
A custom trash can or branded waste container is one whose size, construction, finish, or branding the buyer specifies instead of taking it from a standard line. A custom container project starts with requirements. Depending on the environment and organization, that typically means working through:
- Form factor and stream count. How many waste streams does the station need to handle, and where will it be placed? A manufacturing floor, a corporate lobby, and a campus quad each have different constraints.
- Branding and finish. Logo placement, color matching, and decal quality depend on the organization's brand standards. Corporate recycling bins may follow the same visual standards as the rest of a site's signage.
- Material and durability specs. Industrial environments require different construction than institutional outdoor installations. Our standard frames are steel wire, and custom units can also be made from aluminum.
- Scale and phasing. Some projects start with a single prototype for evaluation. Others involve a phased rollout across multiple buildings or facilities.
Whether the order is a single prototype or a phased rollout of custom garbage bins, the requirements come first and the containers are produced to fit the space.
Customization also extends to our standard product lines. Custom decals and billboard sign kits add branded signage to our standard bins, and interchangeable lids let a site match the lid opening to each waste stream, so a fully fabricated unit is not always needed.
BMW: Custom Containers for a Manufacturing Facility
Waste and recycling stations on a manufacturing plant floor need to hold up to heavy daily use and keep a consistent appearance across the facility.
We produced custom waste containers for BMW's manufacturing facility. The project included:
- Frame construction sized and reinforced for industrial floor use
- Finish and color matched to BMW's facility brand standards
- Decal placement reviewed and confirmed before production began
- Labeling designed to support clear waste stream sorting on an active plant floor
The containers were custom printed, so the plant's waste and recycling stations carry its own branding. Industrial and manufacturing plants are one of the markets we serve.
Mercedes-Benz: Branded Waste Stations for a Corporate Campus
A corporate campus is a different environment than a plant floor. Corporate recycling bins sit in public view and carry a company's marks, so logo placement, finish, and lettering matter.
For Mercedes-Benz, we produced branded outdoor waste stations. The project included:
- Construction: Sheet metal, tubing, and wire, with a door and a pull-out frame for bag removal.
- Branding and lettering: Logo decals of 14 in. to 16 in. square, plus laser-cut "recycling" lettering or a recycling symbol on each side.
- Finish: Alternative powder coat options, including teal.
- Size: Approximate dimensions of 24 in. to 28 in. wide, 20 in. to 22.75 in. deep, and 50 in. to 53 in. high, depending on the design.
We developed three designs, including an arched-top station and a station with a curved metal roof.
University of Tennessee: A Campus Recycling Project
Colleges and universities are one of our core markets, and campus sustainability programs may test a prototype of custom trash bins before committing to a campus-wide rollout. A pilot unit lets facilities teams evaluate placement, size, and labeling before making a larger investment. Our custom-printed container prototype for the University of Tennessee is one example.
Campus recycling programs have to work in heavy daily use, with many different people using them. Four things tend to matter:
- Durable construction. Containers on a campus see constant use, so build quality determines how long a program’s equipment holds up.
- Clear sorting cues. Many users will not stop to read instructions, so a container should show at a glance what belongs inside.
- Less contamination. Confusion about what goes where is a common source of contamination, and clear bins and bags help reduce it.
- Customization. Lid, decal, and color options let a campus match containers to its own signage and waste streams.
For event days or temporary needs, our event boxes and cardboard bins can supplement a permanent installation. Event boxes can be custom printed in full color on two or four sides with a logo, sponsor message, or recycling instructions. The printed boxes are water resistant and made with 100% recycled corrugated content. Custom-printed orders have a 250-box minimum and come in two sizes.
Getting Started on a Custom Container Project
Custom trash cans and branded recycling bins make sense when stock options do not meet the environment, the brand standards, or the operational requirements. A first conversation about custom trash bins usually covers:
- Number of waste streams and approximate unit count
- Placement environment (industrial, institutional, corporate, indoor/outdoor)
- Brand guidelines or visual standards, if applicable
- Whether a prototype or pilot phase is needed before full deployment
From there, we work through fabrication specs and materials, then set a production timeline with you. We have over 30 years of experience building quality recycling and waste systems for industrial, institutional, and corporate clients across the U.S. More than a million of our bins are in use, and all of our products are made in the USA.
