Would You Pay Extra for a Zero-Waste Festival or Sports Event?

Would You Pay Extra for a Zero-Waste Festival or Sports Event?

Joseph Selvaggio |

Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword—it’s becoming a major factor in how events are planned and experienced. From compostable foodware to efficient waste stations, festivals and sports events are taking steps toward zero-waste initiatives. But the big question remains:

Would attendees be willing to pay a little extra for a ticket if an event promised zero waste?

To find out, we ran a LinkedIn poll and the results are below:

  • 25% said YES, sustainability matters, and they’d gladly pay more.
  • 75% said MAYBE, but only if the price increase was small.
  • 0% said NO, showing that cost concerns exist, but sustainability isn’t outright rejected.

The Growing Demand for Sustainable Events

Sustainability in live events is gaining traction, and research backs it up. According to a 2022 NielsenIQ study, 78% of consumers say a sustainable lifestyle is important to them, and 66% are willing to pay more for products and services from environmentally responsible brands (NielsenIQ, 2022).

Even major festivals are taking note. Coachella and Bonnaroo have introduced composting, refillable water stations, and waste diversion programs, while Wimbledon has committed to becoming a net-zero event by 2030 (The Championships, Wimbledon).

Balancing Cost & Sustainability: How Events Can Make It Work

While attendees are open to small price increases, event organizers need to find a balance between cost and impact. Here’s how:

Make the Value Clear – Research from Booking.com found that 73% of travelers want sustainable travel options, but many don’t know where to find them (Booking.com, 2023). If festivals clearly communicate how funds support zero waste (e.g., composting, carbon offsets), attendees may be more willing to pay.

Leverage Sponsorships & Grants – Eco-conscious brands can help offset costs through sponsorships. In fact, Live Nation pledged to eliminate single-use plastics across all its festivals by 2025 (Live Nation, 2021).

Start Small – Even small changes, like switching to compostable food packaging or adding recycling stations, can make a difference without significantly raising ticket prices.

The CLEAR Solution...

One of the biggest challenges at festivals and sporting events is proper waste separation, as overflowing trash bins often lead to recyclables being contaminated. ClearStream’s 3-Stream Waste Stations provide a simple yet highly effective solution. These color-coded, clearly labeled bins help attendees easily sort recyclables, compost, and landfill waste—reducing contamination and ensuring waste is properly diverted. Their lightweight, portable design makes them perfect for large outdoor events, and the transparent bin covers discourage improper disposal. By implementing these stations, event organizers can take a big step toward zero waste without significantly increasing costs.

Would You Pay More for a Greener Event?

The conversation is shifting from if people will pay extra to how much they’re comfortable with. What do you think? Would you pay more for a zero-waste festival or game?
